Based on the principles that all starts from within a healthy body, an open mind, and a good heart. A place where they can learn the tools, skill sets and capabilities to become an outstanding game-changer of tomorrow, learning about healthy food, preserving our planet, and connecting as human-beings, equally, respecting other cultures. Wapaland is a project by Canay Atalay and Rudy de Waele, a Human Works project.

Join the 2nd Wapaland workshop in Istanbul on September 9 in Joint Idea, Arnavutkoy. An afternoon for children to learn about different musical cultures through the learning of ancient tribal songs and experiencing the joy of singing harmonic music together. The participating children will as well learn about expressing their values and how to design their future, learning some basic tools to become a game-changer hero of tomorrow.

In this workshop, children will learn to sing traditional songs from the Yawanawa Tribe of Brazilian Amazon and get to know about the significance of the songs, their usage and the story of the Yawanawa Tribe. This workshop is led by Dimitrios.

Wapaland Percussion Workshop

In the 2nd part of the musical workshop, children will learn to compose their own music, creating their own collaborative composition together, in harmony with each other. Ecem Böke leads this workshop.

During the break children will learn about eating and making healthy food like vegan pancakes and protein balls and will be able to taste the deliciousness of healthy snacks and fruit smoothies. Hande Civan and Murad Asci offer the healthy food snacks.

We close with a value exercise session, where children learn to think about the values they want to live by and learn to reflect upon their future, individually and in community. Canay Atalay leads this workshop.

During the entire workshop (from 14:00 to 16:30), parents can join a “Valuable Parent” workshop. This workshop focuses on our individual values, and the values we would like to have with our children. It provides tips and practical information on becoming “we”, by accepting and celebrating our differences. Zeynep Berkol leads this workshop.

Come and join us for a fun afternoon full of learning by playing!

What will the children do?

14.00-14.30

Kids will learn to sing traditional songs from the Yawanawa Tribe of Brazilian Amazon and get to know about the significance of the songs, their usage and the story of the Yawanawa Tribe.

14.30-15.00

How does one create music? How do feelings reflect into melodies? In this workshop, children will compose their own music. To start composing, we will focus on what makes us happy in nature. We will select an object or concept in nature and start focusing on it. With follow-up questions, we will imagine what kind of features that object has. What kind of a personality would it have, if it were a human being like us? What kind of a life would it have? How would it feel? What would it smell like? What would it sound like? Based on these answers, we will imagine a melody to describe this object in nature. Children will come up with their own melody, rhythm or sound, and start repeating it. After identifying their sounds, each child will add their sound on top of one and other, creating a tribal song. They will create their own collaborative composition together, in harmony with each other. They will need to listen to others, adapt to the communal rhythm and create their own unique sound in this workshop.

15.00 – 15.20

At the end of the workshop practice, we will merge both workshop experiences and investigate how music makes us feel and how it reflects our feelings. Children will make their own definition of what music is to them.

15.20 – 15.40

Break with some healthy snacks and fruit smoothies.

15.40 – 16.30

Value exercise where the children think about the values they want to live by and reflect upon their future, individually and in community.

Wapaland Value Exercise

Note: the event will be recorded for documentation purposes.

What can parents do?

Valuable Parent Workshop

We consciously or unconsciously lead our lives to live according to the values that make us who we are. Studies show that if we can be present in life with our values, we feel satisfaction in life. Our own experiences also support this. After we become a family, we might experience conflicts in prioritising our individual values. The mother, the father and the children are all unique and special in their own way. If this is the case, what kind of an approach should there be, in order for us to experience being a family to its fullest? The Valuable Parent Workshop focuses on our individual values, and the values we would like to have with our children. It provides tips and practical information on becoming “we”, by accepting and celebrating our differences.

Who can join?

English speaking children from 7-14. The only thing you need to bring is your smile 🙂

Parents can join the positive parenting workshop running simultaneously.

About Joint Idea

Joint Idea is a life works platform. What does that mean? We believe that work should be a leading source of meaning and pleasure in our lives, and that this is achievable by constantly upgrading our mindset, unlearning the barriers that have kept us back so far, and by wisely choosing the co-creators of our lives – our tribe. Joint Idea is a both a place and a state of mind where life works.

We opened our first house in Arnavutköy, Istanbul, in 2015 as a curated co-creative community of optimistic and talented people from very diverse disciplines. We came together through the instinctive pull of our shared values: curiosity, openness, freedom, and a love for life and the human spirit. We aim to earn and learn from one another and contribute shared economy that positively touches every aspect of our lives. We connect around our work, art, music, food, play, and take great pleasure in creating memories and business opportunities that are enriching in a variety of ways that are actually important.
